eDNA: Making SDG 14 a Reality

Held on 12 June 2021, a Conversation with Dr. Ellen Pikitch
Endowed Professor of Ocean Conservation Science, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook, New York, USA

eDNA is DNA that is found in the environment. In rivers, estuaries and the ocean, DNA from the organisms that live in the water is shed (such as through fish scales), secreted, or otherwise enters the water, where it is referred to as eDNA. Scientists have now demonstrated that the eDNA in water samples can be extracted and analyzed to reveal the spectrum of aquatic life inhabiting the area. One of the most valuable aspects of using eDNA to discover and quantify species is that it is a non-destructive and non-invasive method. During the discussion, the potential uses of eDNA to address SDG 14 will be considered.

Brainstorming Research Session
21 May 2021

In its mission to reverse the increasing gender digital divide and empower girls in acquiring skills that will help them become both ICT users and creators in the digital world, the Girls in Science 4 SDGs International platform together with the International Telecommunications Union organised a brainstorming research session for the platform members, hosted by Ms. Sandra Cortesi, Director of the Youth and Media team at the Berkman Klein Centre for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

The interaction began with a warm-up session, followed by anecdotes and opinions on the impact of digital technologies (e.g., mobile phones and social media platforms) on well-being, including the relationship between friends and communities. The session also touched on how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the use of digital technologies and the impact of the pandemic on the well-being of individuals. The session also focussed upon better understanding of creating more inclusive opportunities — such as school policies or educational programs — that support well-being and gender equality.

Girls in Science 4 SDGs members across the world expressed their opinions and experiences and heard from viewpoints from one another that widened their understanding on the importance and impact of digital technologies.
